Growing In Faith and Learning

Welcome to St. Leonard's Church of England Primary School

Welcome to St Leonard's CofE Primary School

I am delighted to welcome you to our website. I am proud to be the Headteacher at St. Leonard’s CofE Primary School. We are located in the beautiful village of Wigginton and have a very strong community who are keen to support our school. Our strong Christian ethos underpins everything we do and everyone associated with our school is committed to helping our children ‘Grow in Faith and Learning’. Catherine Young- Headteacher.

Meet the Governors

Please note that this section of our website is currently under review and will be updated shortly.

Welcome to our Governors’ section.

The Governing Body

St Leonard’s CofE (A) Primary School’s Governing Body is responsible for ensuring our children achieve their very best while at our school.

We provide strategic leadership and accountability within the school. We work closely with our Headteacher to set the aims, objectives, policies and targets for the school, and we monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making.

We work closely with a whole range of stakeholders including our children, parents/carers, staff, the local community, the diocese and our local authority to make sure our school provides the best education and learning experience possible.

We meet for full Governing Board three times a year and we also have two subcommittees which focus on standards and performance, and resources.

Our Governing Body comprises:

  • 2 Parent Governors
  • 7 Foundation Governors
  • 1 LA Governor
  • 1 Staff Governor
  • 1 Headteacher

Parent governors are elected by parents of the children at the school, or may be appointed by the governing body if no-one stands for election.

Foundation governors are appointed by the local church and/or diocese.

LA governors are appointed by the local authority. Members of the public can apply to be considered for this role by contacting the LA directly.

Staff governors are elected by staff at the school.

Both of my daughters go to the school and I feel, in recent years, the uniqueness of the place has been lost and voice of the parental body not listen too enough.  I am passionate about resolving both of these things so that the school continues to perform for those children currently here and for those that will come in the future.

At work I am a Board Director of a £multi-million not-for-profit organisation and chair of its Risk Oversight Committee, and a senior leader in a high end FTSE 250 business.

Rev Debra Dyson

Mother of three now adult children. Served as Governor, including Chair and Vice Chair of both their Infant and Junior schools in the past, both of which were community schools in Great Barr, Sandwell, with strong links to our church where I served as a Lay Reader in later years.

Upon Ordination, in Lichfield worked with St Michael’s C of E school and served on school Worship and Ethos Committee.

Cathy Young

I was delighted to be appointed to be the new Headteacher at St. Leonard’s C of E (A) Primary School in September 2017. I am thoroughly enjoying my new challenge and already feel part of the St. Leonard’s family.  I have been teaching for almost 17 years. My teaching career began at a Church school in Staffordshire where I was quickly promoted to be on the school’s senior leadership team taking lead responsibility for Maths and Early Years.

In 2006, I moved to a large school in Warwickshire where I became Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for Learning and Teaching. I was promoted to become the school’s Deputy Headteacher in 2008 and following that I became the Acting Headteacher in 2009 and then again in 2016-2017. This gave me invaluable experience to bring to my first substantive Headship.

As a teacher, I am naturally very interested in learning and have always been keen to widen my knowledge and throughout my career I have gained the National Professional Qualification for Headteachers and a Masters in Educational Leadership.

I am a very proud mum of three young children aged 7, 6 and 2 who keep me busy when I am not at work. We love being outdoors with our crazy dogs as well as travelling and spending time in our house in France.

Graeme White

I was appointed as Foundation Governor in 2011. I am also a parent with two children at the School.  I am a Chartered Management Accountant, working in the automotive industry.

Elizabeth Baker

I am now retired but was a teacher for many years. I worked in Primary schools and also special education for eight years before becoming head of a Nursery, Infant and Junior School. I also inspected schools with the Independent Schools Inspectorate.

I am married to a clergyman and am a regular worshiper in The Church of England. I have two children and three grandchildren who give me a great deal of pleasure.

I have known many children who have been pupils at St. Leonard’s some of whom I keep in touch with today. They are now successful doctors, chemists, missionaries and industrial chemists. I’m very proud of the start they had in our school.

Veronica Coatham

I am a housing and education consultant.  My background is in the social housing sector and higher education and I have been a board member of several third sector organisations. My areas of specialism are professional standards and community regeneration.

Susanne Davies

I was thrilled to be chosen by our parents and carers as their representative on the Governing Body. I am currently Maths Lead and a member of the Standards Committee.

I currently work at a National College with responsibility for overseeing their communications and marketing. I have many years of experience working in the education sector and have participated in numerous Ofsted inspections and have supported the launch of schools within an academy trust. As a senior marketer and communications professional, I am able to bring relevant experience such as strategic leadership, communications, pupil recruitment and GDPR to the school.

Vic Morris

Sue Sly

I was a secondary school teacher for 40 years and I have worshiped at St Leonard’s for 20 years. My three (now grown up) children all attended the school.

Keith Stevens

My business career had involvement in IT on mainframe applications and more recently in running local small businesses and have thus acquired extensive experience in both theoretical and practical terms.  This experience included HR, Budgeting, Cash control, Systems design and implementation and a working knowledge of Health and Safety requirements. I am now retired and am thus able to devote some of my time to furthering the aims of the School. I am also currently chair of Wigginton and Hopwas Parish Council.

Lawrence Tall

Vicki Williams

I began working at the school in September 2016, so this is my second year in employment.  Before then I was involved with the school as my son was educated here from Reception till he left in Year 6. For this whole time, I have always loved the school and am now thrilled to be a teacher here.

During my time at St Leonard’s so far, I have been English and Science lead, teacher of Year 6 and am now also the SENDCo; a challenging role but one which I love. These roles have given me an excellent insight into the challenges faced by staff at all levels. I take pride in my ability to be able to form good working relationships with my colleagues and hope that I have always demonstrated my loyalty and commitment to all.

I feel I am well placed to understand staff views and am confident in voicing my own concerns and those of my colleagues. I am confident that I can fully commit to regular attendance at meetings, which would ensure that I am in a strong position to remind Governors how matters discussed impact on staff, and also to enable them to communicate effectively. I would hope that my personal integrity and real desire to see the school and staff fulfil their potential, make me an ideal candidate for this role.

Meetings

The governors meet termly as a full governing body. The board is also split into two committees: Standards and Resources. The Standards committee focuses on the quality of Teaching and Learning; Safeguarding and Outcomes for pupils including vulnerable groups. The Resource committee leads on Health and Safety and the schools’ budget. The full scope each committee can be found in the sub-committee terms of reference. The governors hold a business meeting at the start of the year to set out their key focus areas for the next academic year.
