How are Governors chosen?

There are several types of school governor:

Parent governors are elected by parents of the children at the school, or may be appointed by the governing body if no-one stands for election.

Community governors are appointed by the governing body.

LA governors are appointed by the local authority. Members of the public can apply to be considered for this role by contacting the LA directly.

Foundation governors are appointed by the local church and/or diocese.

Associate governors are appointed by the full governing body.

Staff governors are elected by staff at the school.

The headteacher is a governor at their own school by right.

What is our role?

Governors play a key role in ensuring that the school provides the best possible education for the children by:

  • Helping to set and monitor school policies
  • Monitoring the overall performance of the school
  • Supporting the curriculum
  • Ensuring that the budget is used to best effect
  • Monitoring and reviewing health and safety
  • Appointing staff

The full governing body meets at least once a term to discuss the running of the school. There are also smaller sub-committees which meet to discuss specific aspects of the school in more detail, such as Leadership and Management, Finance, Curriculum & Data and Health & Safety, along with a meeting of our Foundation Governors.  Committee membership is shown in the table at the top of this page.
