Growing In Faith and Learning

'Growing in Faith and Learning' 'Life in all it's fullness' John 10:10

Welcome to St Leonard's CofE Primary School

Welcome to St. Leonard’s Church of England Primary School. We hope our website gives you a flavour of our vibrant, happy school and the achievements of our delightful children. We are a thriving church school in the picturesque village of Wigginton with a strong Christian ethos, growing in faith and learning. We passionately believe in developing the ‘whole child’ and ensure all children have the opportunity to reach their goals and shine in their own unique and wonderful way. Our kind, caring and dedicated team nurture, motivate and encourage our children to be confident and well-rounded members of their community. I am incredibly proud to be the Headteacher of St. Leonard’s, a place where children develop a passion for learning, feel good about themselves, are proud of their achievements and create lasting memories of friendship and connection in our school family. I warmly invite you to come and visit us at St. Leonard’s Mrs Kirsty Cullen, Headteacher.

    Fri 16 Feb 2018

Robins have had a busy week which has included children adding up groups of penguins and matching the number to quantity. They made some delicious polar bear paw print cakes. They have been describing ice and enjoyed finding animal tracks in the snow. They have been writing descriptions of what they found and they loved showing Mrs Young some of their fabulous writing.

In English, Kingfishers have finished their topic by writing their own stories about knights and castles. They completed work on multiplication and division. They have also been drawing portraits in art and looking at famous portraits. We are creating our own frames for the portraits. Our focus in RE is how Christians pray and we have explored the meaning of our school prayer. We have looked at the rooms in Tamworth castle and used picture clues to find out what the rooms were used for.

In science, Owls have been learning about states of matter. We have learnt about the water cycle. In RE we are learning about how Jesus was an inspirational person. In maths we are learning about fractions. In English we are writing our own story based on our class book 'The Water Horse'. In PE the children have completed their swimming for this year. They have all tried really hard and we were pleased that two Owls have made it into the swimming gala final.

Kestrels had a super day at Landau Forte Academy. In English the children used what they had learned from the animals that visited to produce their own information leaflets. Maths has focused on improper and mixed fractions. In PE the children have been improving their hockey skills and in music, children have learned about notation.

Falcons have been writing diary entries about Maia's journey to the Amazon. We undertook our first practice SATs tests - all of the children did brilliantly. In Topic we have been continuing projects about South American countries. In French children have been speaking and writing conversations. In PE children have been creating a Brazilian dance - Capoeira.

  • Church of England- Vision for Education

    Wed 07 Feb 2018 C. Young

I mentioned in our newsletter that I would share with you the Church of England's vision document- Deeply Christian, serving the common good. This document is focused on four central themes that we will explore through our curriculum: Wisdom, Hope, Community and Dignity. The vision also talks about us promoting ‘life in all its fullness’ and I believe that this is something that we pride ourselves in at St. Leonard’s. We aim to fully explore this document and continue to enhance our provision at St. Leonard’s. Look out for our display in the hall which will producing over the next half term showing exactly how we promote a value Wisdom, Hope, Community and Dignity. You can find this document under our Key Documents tab.

Robins have been learning all about Explorers this week and investigating what they would need to go on an exploration to the South Pole. They have loved learning about Ernest Shackleton. They have been investigating the properties of 3D shapes and comparing them to 2D shapes in Maths. All nursery children have now been put on Lilac reading books and are starting to focus on the initial sounds in words, as well as practise their names.

In Maths, Kingfishers have been learning about multiplication and division. We have introduced the word multiple and we’re looking at multiplication and related division facts for 2, 5 and 10. In English they have written descriptions of Camelot and are now looking at the job of a knight to write job adverts. In Science we have investigated absorbent and non- absorbent materials. Computing has involved simple programming to create shapes on screen by adding appropriate directions.

Owls have been learning about symmetrical patterns and lines of symmetry in shapes. They have also learnt about perpendicular lines, parallel lines, horizontal lines and vertical lines. In English they have written letters to their new pen pals from a different generation, learnt about apostrophes and written a description of The Water Horse. In topic lessons they have looked at the different stages of a river and located rivers in the UK and around the world.

In Kestrels the children have been busy writing newspaper reports this week in English, tying in with our African topic. They have also been learning about time zones and lines of longitude and latitude in Geography. Our new Maths theme, fractions, began with a chocolate problem with other practical opportunities planned. We have been exploring how we can be better stewards of God’s precious world in RE. The Year 5 children also created amazing paired gym sequences in PE.

Falcons have been writing a biography for Eva Ibbotson who is the author of their new class text ‘Journey to the River Sea’. They have also been writing predictions about what they think this text will be about. In Maths they have been convering decimals and percentages using the lattice method. In topic, they have started group projects about different countries in South America which must include a piece of writing and a piece of art work.
