Growing In Faith and Learning

'Growing in Faith and Learning' 'Life in all it's fullness' John 10:10

Welcome to St Leonard's CofE Primary School

Welcome to St. Leonard’s Church of England Primary School. We hope our website gives you a flavour of our vibrant, happy school and the achievements of our delightful children. We are a thriving church school in the picturesque village of Wigginton with a strong Christian ethos, growing in faith and learning. We passionately believe in developing the ‘whole child’ and ensure all children have the opportunity to reach their goals and shine in their own unique and wonderful way. Our kind, caring and dedicated team nurture, motivate and encourage our children to be confident and well-rounded members of their community. I am incredibly proud to be the Headteacher of St. Leonard’s, a place where children develop a passion for learning, feel good about themselves, are proud of their achievements and create lasting memories of friendship and connection in our school family. I warmly invite you to come and visit us at St. Leonard’s Mrs Kirsty Cullen, Headteacher.

Robins have had a busy and exciting couple of weeks. Last week we read ‘The Singing Mermaid’, thinking carefully about what they would do if they were a mermaid and creating some lovely art work. In PE, they created a pirate dance, doing the magic 8 to keep count. They were very lucky to have Jaws the guinea pig come to school for a visit and were keen to learn about what he ate and stroke him. Our outdoor area has had an exciting addition of artificial grass and climbing equipment, that can be built by the children! This week we are reading ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ and doing lots of underwater themed art work.

Another busy fortnight for Kingfishers! We are very happy to welcome a student teacher from the University of Birmingham to our class - Miss Lenartowicz will be with us for the next few weeks. The children have written informal letters to her telling her all about us. They have also written postcards in the style of Sunny from Meerkat Mail. In RE they have been discussing how Jesus brings us peace. In Science they have been looking at animal life cycles and identifying the different stage of the human life cycle. They have been ordering and comparing numbers in Maths.

Owls have started learning about fractions in maths. They have been finding fractions of shapes and equivalent fractions. In Topic they have finished their Viking shields and evaluated them. In RE, they have been learning about the role Christians played in WW1. This week they learned about Owen Thomas who joined the Non Combatant Corps. In English this week, they have written a description of a dragon and worked on prepositional phrases.

Another busy couple of weeks for Falcons. The children have been working incredibly hard and I am very proud of them all! In English they have written brilliant newspaper reports about the troll who escaped the dungeons at Hogwarts.  In maths they have worked on various different angles – on a straight line, round a point and in triangles. They have also been continuing with their computing unit, learning about the ‘Swinging Sixties’ and looking at different viewpoints of creation in RE.

Robins are thoroughly enjoying their Pirates, Mermaids and under the sea topic, singing songs and sharing lots of new stories. This week they are reading the story ‘Pirates Love Underpants’ and
the children have already designed their own underpants to display in the classroom! They enjoyed making treasure maps, and in Maths they looked at doubling and halving numbers.

In RE Kingfishers have been discussing how Jesus is a friend to everyone. Leading on from our trip to the zoo they have been learning about animal groups and which young animals have live births or are born from eggs. There has been a wonderful array of pet visitors to the class – dogs, chickens, guinea pigs and a tortoise to name a few - and we have more planned: The children’s questions have been wonderful! Thank you to parents for bringing them to see us. They have been making clay models of animals and have written fabulous recounts of our trip. In Maths they continue to use money, applying our knowledge of the value of coins to add and subtract in problem solving.

Owls have continued to learn about the Vikings and Anglo Saxon Kings such as Alfred the Great. They have been using scratch to develop simple animations. They now include sound effects and their sprites can change colour! In maths they have started to look at fractions. They have learnt what unit and non-unit fractions are and have identified different fractions. The children have also been learning how to represent fractions in different ways. In English this week, they have planned and written a set of instructions about how to catch a dragon.

Falcons have had another busy couple of weeks. They are still really enjoying their Harry Potter topic and had a great dress up day last week where they produced a fantastic piece of artwork. In English they have been writing descriptions using figurative language and inventing their own mythical creatures. In maths they have just finished their area and perimeter unit where they have calculated perimeter and area of compound rectilinear shapes, triangles and parallelograms.
