Growing In Faith and Learning

'Growing in Faith and Learning' 'Life in all it's fullness' John 10:10

Welcome to St Leonard's CofE Primary School

Welcome to St. Leonard’s Church of England Primary School. We hope our website gives you a flavour of our vibrant, happy school and the achievements of our delightful children. We are a thriving church school in the picturesque village of Wigginton with a strong Christian ethos, growing in faith and learning. We passionately believe in developing the ‘whole child’ and ensure all children have the opportunity to reach their goals and shine in their own unique and wonderful way. Our kind, caring and dedicated team nurture, motivate and encourage our children to be confident and well-rounded members of their community. I am incredibly proud to be the Headteacher of St. Leonard’s, a place where children develop a passion for learning, feel good about themselves, are proud of their achievements and create lasting memories of friendship and connection in our school family. I warmly invite you to come and visit us at St. Leonard’s Mrs Kirsty Cullen, Headteacher.

  • Family Worship and the last 2 weeks

    Fri 22 Mar 2019

We have had lots to celebrate over the last 2 weeks, including four of our children making it to the areas schools’ swimming gala. Well done to Lula, Tabitha, Freya and Natalie. An extra special well done to Natalie for winning her race making her the fastest swimmer for her age in Tamworth. Our brilliant dancers have also made us extremely proud this week performing in the Schools’ Gotta Dance show at the Prince of Wales Theatre in Cannock. Their dance was stunning and commented highly upon by many other schools and parents

Robins have had a wonderful couple of weeks and are enjoying learning about different forms of transport. We were lucky to have a visit from a tractor last week, where the children got to have a closer look at the tractor as well as getting to sit on it. We are really pushing independence this term and it has been wonderful to see the children going to more activities independently. The Reception children are really working hard to apply their phonics and write in sentences. In maths they have been learning about 3D shapes and discussing their properties, as well as continuing to develop their number work in continuous provision. In RE they have been learning about the Good Samaritan and how we can do good deeds. They have also written their own prayers on candles.

Kingfishers had a fabulous time at Sudbury Toy Museum and learnt so much about toys throughout time – thank you very much to all those that sent in old toys for us to look at! In Maths they have started a new unit on fractions, focussing on halves and quarters of objects and shapes. In RE they had a debate about whether forgiveness, friendship or peace matters the most. They have been learning a poem for performance which Robins class enjoyed watching! In Science they have been identifying the basic needs of animals. They continue to practise passing skills in rugby and in Gym have been developing their skills in balancing, rolling and making shapes with their bodies. They have written diaries in English.

Owls took part in a fantastic Viking day. The class learnt a lot about the Vikings including how they traded, travelled and fought. In English, the children have planned and have started to write a dragon poem titled ‘The dragons inside of me’. In RE, they have been learning about the The Chattri war memorial in Brighton and how people from other religions also fought in the British Army during World War 1. In maths, they have been learning how to find fractions of amounts and applying this knowledge to solve fraction word problems.

In maths Falcons have continued work on fractions and Year 6 have also been converting fractions to decimals and percentages and finding percentages of amounts. In English, the children finished off their flashback stories based on Harry Potter and had some amazing pieces of work. We have now begun a two-week unit on poetry and are hoping that the children will be able to rehearse a piece to perform to you. In RE they are building up to Easter with our unit, ‘What did Jesus do to help humans?’ We have begun this by looking in more detail at the 15 Stations of the Cross. Miss Whetton is still with us and the children are enjoying her teaching them all about the 1960’s. They have particularly enjoyed the 60’s dancing they have been doing in PE!

  • Family Worship and the last two weeks

    Fri 08 Mar 2019

It has been a busy couple of weeks in school.  The whole school celebrated St. Chad’s Feast Day by taking part in a range of activities. On Thursday the whole school took part in World Book day to celebrate our love for Reading. There were some wonderful costumes.

Robins have had a wonderful couple of weeks and are thoroughly enjoying the start of our ‘Wheels, Wings and Other Things’ topic. They had a wonderful bus journey, in the hall, to start the topic all the way to the zoo. The children enjoyed giving their tickets and had a wonderful discussion about all the things they could see on the journey. They are enjoying the story ‘Naughty Bus’ and are excited to explore more of the story. The children have been working hard to improve their mouse skills in the ICT suite, playing games for maths and making pictures as part of our topic. The children explored the significance of the palm cross in our RE lesson and thoroughly enjoyed our St. Chad’s Day.

Kingfishers have started this new half term with an exciting new theme in History, ‘Toys Throughout Time’. They have a Toy Shop role play area in class and are very much looking forward to our trip to Sudbury Toy Museum on 20th March. We have a beautiful text in English (‘The Bear and the Piano’) and have been using Talk for Writing to inspire and develop us as writers. They have a new prayer space in class for Lent and were very enthusiastic about the Ashing in Church with Rev Deb on Wednesday! In Science they have been conducting an investigation comparing and recording the speeds and ages of various children running. They have been focussing on dodging opponents in rugby and have started a new unit in Gym. They have been multiplying amounts and numbers in Maths.

Owls have evaluated their Viking shields and suggested ways that they could improve them. They have started to rehearse the Easter production and have been learning about how the Non Combatant Corp was preserved in WW1 as part of our RE topic. In maths, adding and subtracting fractions has been our focus. In English, they have written a report about a new species of dragon that will go into Owls’ ‘Big Book of Dragons.’ In PE, they have been completing fitness circuits and recording their results.

Falcons have had a busy couple of weeks yet again. They are now splitting up into our different year groups in the morning and Year 6 have been working incredibly hard. They have been completing last year’s SATs tests to get a flavour of what they are like and looking for the gaps in their learning that they need to work on. Year 5 have also been working hard on fractions and writing flashback stories. In topic, Miss Whetton (our student) has been teaching the children all about the 1960’s and they are thoroughly enjoying this.
