Curriculum Intent Statement

'Growing in Faith and Learning'

 

Our aim at St. Leonard’s is to provide a curriculum of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief. We want learning to be irresistible through the breadth of exciting curricular and extra-curricular opportunities provided for our pupils. Our aim is for children to belong to a school where they achieve, thrive and succeed through a curriculum that is ambitious, inclusive and rooted in our research.

 

Achievement for all is high and individual talents are nurtured. Our curriculum is designed to enable our pupils to leave us as successful, independent learners and happy and confident individuals. Through our curriculum we aim to develop a generation of caring, responsible citizens that are excited by challenge, change and possibility.

 

Through the curriculum we promote a love of reading and demonstrate to pupils that reading is key to their learning. Our curriculum immerses pupils in a variety of topics and subjects, supported by high quality texts and reading for pleasure is highly encouraged.

We want our pupils and staff to ‘Live life in all its fullness’ (John 10:10) and to flourish in our care.

Curriculum Implementation

 

Our bespoke curriculum was designed for our pupils, to give them the best possible opportunity to learn across all subjects, within a faith school. Our specialist subject leaders have worked hard to ensure that the content of it is ambitious, exciting and challenging for all pupils. We regularly review our curriculum to evaluate programmes of study, learning outcomes and to further develop the its content, using research to underpin our approach. 

 

Our Curriculum in Action

In our curriculum, we strive for excellence. We ensure this through the following:

 

Ambitious Knowledge and Skills

Each subject follows a progression model that builds substantive and disciplinary knowledge over time. Long-term maps and progression grids clarify essential content, vocabulary and concepts.

Inclusive Pedagogy

Adaptive teaching ensures that all pupils access the full curriculum. Scaffolding, precise feedback, and formative assessment ensure that SEND and disadvantaged pupils make strong progress/ are given the best possible opportunities. 

Spirituality

As a Church of England school, faith is at the heart of everything we do. We build opportunities for spiritual reflection, growth and action into our curriculum, underpinned by our school values of community, hope, dignity, perseverance, wisdom and forgiveness. 

Community and Citizenship

In our school, pupils engage with real-world issues and become courageous advocates, helping them understand their role as active citizens who make a positive difference.

High Expectations and Outcomes

High-quality teaching, dedicated and purposeful professional development time and thorough monitoring of subjects ensure the consistent quality of the curriculum. Frequent low-stakes assessment, termly summative assessment and rigorous analysis of outcomes drive responsive planning and therefore sustained progress.

 

Our curriculum intent will also be implemented through our 'Ten Teaching and Learning Principles' which are embedded into our curriculum and daily teaching. These ensure that our curriculum is delivered effectively and consistently so all children can reach their potential.

                                             

 

At St. Leonard's, we have mixed age classes meaning that two year groups are taught together and because of this, our curriculum runs on a two-year cycle (A and B). Over the course of these cycles, all National Curriculum objectives have been carefully planned for, providing children with a true broad and balanced curriculum.

Inclusion within our Curriculum

 

At St. Leonard's CE Primary School all class teachers are responsible for providing a curriculum that is suitable for all pupils in the class, including those with Special Educational Needs and/or disabilities (SEND) with support from the SENCo. We have high expectations for all pupils and are committed to ensuring our curriculum complies with the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability regulations 2014. We provide a fully inclusive learning environment for all pupils including those with SEND. Additional information can be found on our Special Educational Needs page below. 

As well as meeting National Curriculum objectives, we make sure our curriculum also includes plenty of opportunities for SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) development and regular references to British Values.  For more information on how we do this, please click on the linked pages below:

The impact of our curriculum is reflected in both academic achievement and personal development:

 

Academic Potential

Progress and attainment for the pupils at our school is high, which is reflected in our end of key stage outcomes (please see the tables below). Children are engaged in their learning and strive to be the best they can be. They apply their knowledge with depth, accuracy and independence, demonstrating secure disciplinary understanding across subjects.

 

Personal Potential and Character

Pupils leave St. Leonard's as confident, articulate and compassionate children. They demonstrate and embody our school values of hope, dignity, community, wisdom, perseverance and forgiveness. Through experiences in leadership, creativity and community service, they develop resilience, empathy and curiosity.

 

Equity and Inclusion

Gaps for disadvantaged and SEND pupils are narrowed through targeted support and consistent access to the full curriculum. Engagement and participation for all children is as strength of the school.

 

Cultural Capital

Personal Development within a enhanced, engaging curriculum is a high priority at our school. Our pupils experience a broad range of enrichment, from residentials, art events, sporting events and competitions, musical showcases and experiences, science fairs and curriculum trips, to name a few. Our pupils leave us a courageous, adventurous individuals who are proud of their abilities and are ready to develop them in the future. 

 

The true impact of our curriculum is seen in the confident, capable and compassionate learners who leave St. Leonard's C of E Primary School ready for their next stage of education, equipped to make a difference and empowered to achieve, thrive and belong.

 

How do we assess our curriculum?

 

At. St. Leonard's, our approaches to assessing reading, writing and mathematics are robust, established and clear. We use a mixture of summative tests and teacher assessment to make accurate judgements of how well pupils are doing and where they need further support. Our results are a clear indication of the impact of our curriculum. 

 

Within our curriculum, we use the following assessment strategies to support our pupils' progress:

 

  • Termly summative assessments in Reading, Maths, GPS and Times Tables. We use the results of these assessments to inform our planning so children's next steps are identified and then met. 
  • Ongoing assessment of Phonics, using our SSP programme: 'Little Wandle'. This is done every half term and children who need help are quickly identified and given the right support. 
  • Teacher assessment of writing, supported through moderation. 
  • KWLs: 'What I Know', 'What I'd like to find out' (asking the big questions) and 'What I've Learnt'. These are done at the beginning and end of every unit, with reference to them throughout so children can build upon previous learning. 
  • Daily formative assessment that's carried out within the lesson. We adapt our teaching from this to meet the needs of the children. 

 

Assessment within our wider curriculum is carried out through our KWLs (above), which provide clear insights into pupils’ prior knowledge and measure the impact of teaching on what pupils know, understand, and remember. These assessments are supplemented by ongoing formative approaches. Teachers also use active observation and assessment for learning strategies to identify misconceptions and adapt teaching in real time. In addition, pupils take part in low-stakes quizzes at key points within lessons to strengthen retrieval and recall of key components of knowledge, supporting long-term retention and curriculum progression.
