Owls

Welcome to Owls!

Owls is a mixed year 3/4 lower key stage two class.  This year owls will be taught by Mrs Lyons with the support of Mrs Hateley, Mrs Solomon and Mrs Hopkins.

Topic

Our topic for this term is The Romans. We are going to be learning all about the history of the Romans, where they came from and the invasion of the Roman army on Europe and Britain.

Reading

Please encourage your children to read everyday and to make a note of any reading they complete in their reading records, which will be checked each morning. Some children will be on colour banded books and will be looking to move up the bands until they become an early reader, then onto free readers, where they can chose their own books. Once they have read a section of the book it would be fantastic if you could ask them questions about what they have read and discuss the text or any new vocabulary/concepts they have come across.  It is really important that the children read every day as this has a positive effect on their learning and vocabulary.

Six Book Reading Challenge

In Key Stage 2 each year group has the opportunity to complete the six book reading challenge. Each year group has 6 books that they have to try and read before the end of the year. These books can be read independently by the children or with an adult’s support. Once the children have completed all of the books, they will receive a medal and certificate in family worship. Although this is a challenge, it is important that the children are reading the books and not just scan reading to get through them as quick as possible, the books are selected high quality texts suitable for their age group so need to be read/shared with good understanding.

Times Tables

The children will have a times tables test every Monday. The times table test will consist of multiplication and division facts.

Spelling Test

A spelling test will take place every Tuesday. The spellings your child needs to learn will have been sent out on a sheet when they achieve 5 out of 5 on their spellings they will move on to the next  set of spellings. If they don't achieve 5 out of 5 they will continue to practise the spellings they are on.

PE

PE will be taught on a Monday and Thursday this Term. PE kit should consist of a white polo shirt, navy or black shorts for indoors and tracksuit bottoms for outdoors, a jumper or hooded top for outdoors and trainers or pumps suitable for physical activity. No jewellery should be worn on PE days. On Mondays children will come in their PE kits and on a Thursday children will come in their school clothes as we will be going off site for swimming. Swimming kits should consist of suitable swimming trunks/swimsuits (with straps), a swimming hat (long hair is to be tied up to help with putting their hats on) and a towel.
