RE Statement of Intent

Religious Education at St Leonard's is taught using the Diocese of Lichfield’s Guidance and follows the ‘Understanding Christianity’ scheme. It is our intent that Religious Education promotes the Christian concept of the Trinity to engage and inform, equipping our children with the knowledge and skills to ask and seek answers to challenging questions.

Religious Education is central to our Christian vision and underpins our commitment to enabling every child to flourish. As a Church of England school within the Lichfield Diocese, our RE curriculum is rooted in the Christian faith while encouraging pupils to engage with a range of world faiths and worldviews with curiosity, respect and understanding.

Inspired by our core values of Hope, Community, Dignity and Wisdom, we aim to provide an engaging and thought-provoking RE curriculum that enables children to explore life's big questions, reflect on their own beliefs and appreciate the beliefs and experiences of others. We want every child to develop the confidence to think deeply, ask questions and respond with empathy, compassion and integrity.

Through Religious Education, we strive to:

• Develop a secure understanding of Christianity as a living faith and its significance within Britain and the wider world.
• Foster knowledge and understanding of other major world religions and worldviews, promoting mutual respect and celebrating diversity.
• Encourage pupils to think critically, reflect spiritually and make informed, respectful judgements about religious and ethical issues.
• Inspire children to live out our school values of Hope, Community, Dignity and Wisdom in their daily lives, recognising the worth of every individual and their responsibility towards others.
• Equip pupils with the knowledge, vocabulary and skills to engage confidently with questions of meaning, purpose, identity and belonging.

Our RE curriculum nurtures children's spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and supports them in becoming compassionate, respectful and thoughtful members of society. Through rich learning experiences, collective reflection and meaningful discussion, we seek to develop pupils who are wise in their thinking, hopeful in their outlook, committed to their community and respectful of the dignity of all people, enabling them to flourish both now and in the future.
